Welcome to a random Saturday morning at our house. Time for…. Dutch vanilla waffles!
My favorite waffles are the crunchy-on-the-outside-ones and soft-in-the-middle. The “Luikse Wafel” or Liege waffles are usually made with crunchy pearl sugar.
The sad part of these waffles is that it’s a lengthy process ….starting early in the morning to let the dough rise….my kids cannot wait for that and I don’t want to get up early on a Saturday! They want them right now!!!
In case you’re craving croissants (and you made this home made puff pastry beforehand), you can make croissants even quicker than waffles! We’ll leave them for our Sunday Brunch!
My story about our Dutch Waffles
So, I make easy softer “Dutch waffles”, which are quick and loved by the kids, just how my mom used to make them. She had a waffle maker for heart-shaped waffles. She used to make a bunch for school parties and birthday’s. That’s why I call them Dutch waffles. I don’t know if there are really typical Dutch waffles. People might think that the “Stroopwafel” is the typical Dutch waffle.
Waffles in the USA
We used to eat our waffles just plain or we added some whipped cream, fresh strawberries or strawberry jam, but since I live in the United States, where everything seems to be MUCH sweeter, we found new things to top these waffles with.
Well, actually not top them with, more dipping in. The waffles can be too soft to hold the toppings.
Here are some topping, aka dipping ideas:
- cinnamon sugar
- powdered sugar
- lemon curd
- whipped cream (make it yourself : whisk heavy whipping cream with some sugar and a little bit of vanilla extract until it becomes whipped cream)
- Any kind of fruit (banana’s, strawberries and blueberries are our favorites)
- Any kind of marmalade or jam.
- nut butters
- cookie butter
- chocolate spread.
I also found that the recipes for vanilla waffles in the Netherlands are a little different. It is for example not easy to find “vanilla sugar”, which comes in small bags, like the ones yeast comes in. It is not sugar mixed with vanilla, even though I’m replacing it with sugar and vanilla extract.
I also found some twists on these waffle recipes, which I’ll try out soon too:
- Oatmeal Waffles (in Dutch)
- Gluten Free Waffles
- Waffles made with Greek Yogurt (in Dutch)
Easy and quick Waffle recipe
This is THE waffle recipe I remember from my childhood. My mom made these cute little heart shapes waffles for birthday parties or just for the Saturday afternoon. I just use my American bought waffle iron.
Ingredients
- 1 sticks butter room temperature
- 1/2 cups sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract or 1 pack of vanilla sugar if you have it
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 2 cups flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
Instructions
-
Beat the butter, sugar and vanilla for about 3 minutes in the kitchen aid machine
-
Separate the eggs and beat the egg yolks with the butter-sugar mixture.
-
Then add the milk and beat until it is nicely combined
-
Add the sifted flour to the batter.
-
Beat the egg whites with a little salt into peaks. This can be a tricky thing to do. I usually take a metal bowl and rub it with some lemon juice.
-
Slowly fold the egg white under the batter with a rubber spatula.
-
Let the waffle iron get really hot and grease it with a little oil.
-
Use a ladle to drop batter onto your iron. Cook between 3-5 minutes. This depends on the waffle iron.
-
Choose from the toppings above to go with your waffles….Enjoy!
What are your to go to breakfast for the Saturday morning?
