Trip to Amsterdam. Part 5: A rainy day in Amsterdam.

And as the forecast said, we were about to expect a lot of rain. We are in Amsterdam and it is already Day 5 of our trip to the Netherlands. It’s going to be a rainy day in Amsterdam. What are we going to do? And how did we end up in Amsterdam in the first place and what did we do so far? Read more about it here. The 2nd day, 3rd day and the canal cruise at night on the 4th day.

What to do on a rainy day in Amsterdam?

There are some good things to see and do in Amsterdam, even when it’s rainy outside. It is not only about museums, but check out some cafes for coffee or hot chocolate, store hopping etc.

This is what we did:

Back to Noordermarkt

  • We were here a few days ago, but not sure if all the stalls at the market were going to be there again with the rain in the forecast. We were ready to check them out anyway. There were less food stalls and more antique stalls on Monday’s. Purses, hats, scarfs and rings were bought by my American colleagues. It started to rain during our market stroll. Good we brought our rain ponchos!
  • I was just looking around and saw an old time favorite Dutch treat: Poffertjes. Here is a recipe if you’d like to make these “Pofferjes” at home.

  • Then it was time to warm up in a cafe close by. A cute little cupcake was stuck at the end of the spoon of my cappuccino. The Dutch are known for adding a little cookie to your cup of coffee. For lunch a little later in that same cafe/restaurant, I ordered a “Tuna melt”. This cafe was called “Finch” (Note: this cafe/restaurant recently closed unfortunately).

A fancy Clothing Store

  • We got an Uber van to drop us off close to “het Stedelijk Museum”. We didn’t go there for the museum, but for an extraordinary shop across the street, called “People of the Labyrinth”. This store was filled with screen printed clothes, leather furniture and other accessories. This visit was mainly for getting design and color ideas. It was pretty cool to see which kinds of techniques and colors they use for clothing and even leather furniture.
  • We crossed the street in the pouring rain to look at the fun things in the gift store at “het Stedelijk Museum”.
  • After that, we had something to drink at the restaurant, belonging to the museum. If you ask for mint tea, you’ll get warm water with sprigs of mint in it and honey. Which tastes really good! Good idea for home.
  • Back to our apartment with the Uber van. It was time to warm up and dry up from a rainy day in Amsterdam.

We rested the rest of the day at our apartment.

And a nice family surprise!

A few weeks before I traveled to Amsterdam, some of my cousins were trying to organize a get together in Amsterdam. Tonight was the time to see them. It has always been difficult to find the right time to see each other. But now, we did it!

So, this was a surprise to see my cousins and even connect with my aunt on the phone. We went to a fun little restaurant called “de Zagerij”. We had a great time catching up, talking and showing each other pictures of our families. In 2016 we managed to get all of our cousins together, even the one living in Australia, one from Dubai and us from the USA!

Back at the apartment it was time to go to sleep…..Welterusten! Thanks for following this journey with me. We almost have to say goodbye to my colleagues. See you at Part 6 of this trip to The Netherlands.
