All Things Dutch, Travel Europe

Trip to Amsterdam. Day 3: The Noordermarkt and Thrift Shops.

It is Saturday! And Saturday means, going to a Farmers Market. In this case the “Noordermarkt”.   It was also a great day for finding lovely thrift shops or vintage shops on Haarlemmer straat.

For those of you who just tuned in: We left Chicago and flew to Reykjavik. Then we arrived in Amsterdam yesterday.

The “Noordermarkt”

It is a cloudy, chilly but a dry day. After a small breakfast (not too much, because we’re going to try all kinds of Dutch treats at the farmers market), we bundle up and leave our apartment. We meet the other group at the “Noordermarkt”. Every Saturday, you’ll find organic food stalls and other stalls with clothing, fabric, antiques, flowers, art items and more at this farmer’s market.

We tried fries with mayonnaise and ketchup in a sturdy cardboard cone with a little cup to hold the condiments. Some of us had hand poured drip coffee and samples of cheese and bread. Just looking at the displays was an amazing experience. I wanted to buy all of it. Gosh, I missed young cheese and great Dutch bread.

I finally bought a piece of cheese, some croissants, pumpkin seed bread, a cute dress, apples and oranges (vitamin C, you know!). I saw a cute wooden stamp that resembles my logo: a bicycle with a flower basket. I didn’t buy it… yet… The market will be open again on Monday morning sans the food stalls. Maybe I will get it, oh, so tempting!

The thrift shops on Haarlemmer Straat

On our way back to our apartment, we snacked on our market bought goodies. This was our lunch then, I guess!

After lunch we met again with the other group at their apartment, which was almost on Haarlemmer Straat. This street is a long street with tons of little shops. We had to warn people, especially my pregnant friend, not to go into “coffee shops”. Not even for a restroom break. These “coffee shops” are not the coffee shops we know in the US, like Starbucks. Yes, you can get coffee there, but the main products are joints, cannabis products, space cake and magic mushrooms. There were tons of these coffee shops around, even next door to our apartment.

We found some thrift shops with some good deals on coats, bags, jewelry and shoes. After a few hours of shopping, the tummies grumbled. Time to eat at an organic salad bar, which also had soups, even dahl soup. I had a yummy salad bowl with chicken. Now we were getting tired. Some of us were not tired yet and ended up at another restaurant which we checked out the day before, which had “Appeltaart”. The next day we found out they had more than just “appeltaart”. They even tried “Stamppot with kale”. That was so cool! I was done for the day though and some of us headed back to the apartment….after eating 2 yummy macarons.
